Romare Bearden: A Black Odyssey is a dazzling exhibition of collages and other works inspired by Homer's classical epics.
The tale of the traveler's search for home was a theme that occupied Bearden, a Charlotte native whose family was part of the Great Migration. This powerful exhibition expands our view of the Bearden canon and his influence as an artist while reinforcing Homer's continuing relevance as a poet. To stress the universality of Homer's epic, Bearden made all of the Homeric gods, mortals, heroes, and villains black. This choice asserts that all viewers can relate to the central themes of the storylonging, struggle, and perseverance. Read the full exhibition description. Weekend packages available at reynoldahouse.org/overnight.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING Charlotte Observer, November 11, 2012"After Bearden-mania swept Charlotte in the fall of 2011 when exhibition spaces all over town mounted shows celebrating the 100th anniversary of Romare Bearden's birth you could be excused for thinking you'd seen enough work by the noted artist and Charlotte native. But a Bearden exhibition in Winston-Salem is worth the drive. It may have you seeing a literary classic in a new light."
Winston-Salem Journal, October 7, 2012
"My hope is that this exhibition will strengthen our capacity to sustain substantive community conversation, all of which will lead us back to a better understanding of ourselves." - Reynolda House Executive Director Allison Perkins
American Fine Art Magazine, September/October 2012
"According to Managing Curator Allison Slaby, one of the more intriguing aspets of this new exhibition is the theme of journey or a search for home, something that really occupied the artist over the course of his career."
ARTNews Magazine, July 2012
Excerpt: Robert O'Meally, who is writing the catalogue essay and interpretive material for the SITES exhibition, sees Bearden's "Black Odyssey" cycle as a metaphor for the American experience, since migration is a theme common to all citizens. Like the patchwork of Odysseus's life, with its many turns, choices, and diversions, O'Meally says, "Bearden makes it clear that, yes, he's a black man from North Carolina, but he's also from Harlem and an American. And he can be all these things without losing integrity."
