and Stephen Crane in New York City

Wake Forest University professor Barry Maine will speak on Stephen
Crane’s 1894 literary sketch The Men in the Storm, and will compare it with
Edwin S. Porter’s film New York City in a Blizzard (1901).

Michael Lasser is a music historian and host of the Peabody Award-winning
radio program “Fascinatin’ Rhythm.” His talks on popular American
music are nationally renowned for their humor and vivacity.

Sandow and Houdini: The Perfect Man and the Greatest Escape Artist
Tuesday, June 27, 5:30 p.m.; $7, Members/students $5
John Kasson, professor of history and American Studies at UNC-Chapel
Hill, is a leading scholar in the field of cultural studies. He will speak
about his research into body artist Eugen Sandow, a key subject in
Moving Pictures.

Play: Moving Pictures, by Dan O’Brien

Dan O’Brien’s 1991 play Moving Pictures is set at the dawn of cinema.
Inventor Thomas Edison wants his moving images to win over the world.
This vaudevillian comedy is directed by WFU adjunct professor Ray Collins.

Dance: Time Lapse Dance Company
Friday, June 2, 8 p.m.; $15, Members/students $10
Jody Sperling will discuss American dancer and choreographer Loie Fuller’s
influence on art, dance, and cinema. Her Time Lapse Dance Company will
perform dance popular at the turn of the twentieth century with images
from Terry Borton and his American Magic-Lantern Theater.

Festival: Coney Island Community Day

Join us for a Sunday afternoon festival in the style of Coney Island at
the turn of the twentieth century. Enjoy an original working calliope,
a flea circus, jugglers, games of skill, waltzing lessons, boxing
demonstrations, choral music, stations for making animation toys and
flipbooks, and traditional boardwalk refreshments.
